About ayothayaxad

ayothayaxad was established by Thai-qualified lawyers with a particular focus on the intersection of personal law and cross-border complexity. The name recalls a period in Thai history when Ayutthaya served as a centre of diplomatic exchange — a fitting reference for a practice that frequently works between different legal systems, languages, and cultures.

Our offices are located in Watthana, close to the embassies and government offices that form the practical geography of international marriage and divorce proceedings in Bangkok. This proximity is deliberate — it reflects how we work: close to the institutions and processes that matter, without unnecessary distance from the people we serve.

The practice handles three core areas: international and mixed-nationality marriage registration, contested divorce before the Family and Juvenile Court, and uncontested divorce documentation. Each area requires a different quality of attention. Marriage registration calls for organisational clarity and an understanding of embassy requirements. Contested divorce demands legal strategy alongside emotional steadiness. Uncontested proceedings need careful drafting so that each party genuinely understands what they are agreeing to.

We do not operate a high-volume intake model. Each matter is handled by a qualified lawyer with direct oversight, and we are careful not to take on more than we can manage well. This means we sometimes have a brief waiting list — and we think that is the right approach.

Strict Confidentiality

Client information is treated as private as a matter of professional obligation and personal principle. We do not discuss case details outside the practice.

Fee Transparency

Service fees and likely additional costs are stated in writing before any engagement begins. Clients are not presented with charges that were not discussed in advance.

Document Verification

We review all documents submitted by clients — translations, affidavits, identification — before relying on them in any filing or registration process.

Emotionally Considered Practice

Family law matters are rarely purely legal. Our approach allows space for the personal dimensions of each case and avoids unnecessary pressure or haste.

Continuing Legal Education

Our team participates in the Lawyers Council's continuing education programmes and monitors updates to family law, court practice, and registration procedures.

Family Law in Thailand — What It Actually Involves

Thailand's approach to marriage and divorce is governed primarily by the Civil and Commercial Code, Books V and VI, and supplemented by the Registration of Persons Act and relevant ministerial regulations. For couples where one or both parties are foreign nationals, the requirements extend further — into home-country consular procedures, international document legalisation, and, in some cases, immigration considerations.

Marriage registration in Thailand takes place at a district office (Amphoe or Khet depending on the area). For Thai nationals marrying each other, the process is relatively straightforward. When a foreign national is involved, the path requires an affidavit from their home country's embassy in Thailand, confirming they are legally free to marry, along with certified translation of that affidavit into Thai. The affidavit requirements differ by nationality, and embassy processing times vary considerably. ayothayaxad manages this coordination on behalf of clients, reducing the back-and-forth that can otherwise consume weeks.

Divorce in Thailand may take place at the district office if both parties consent and there are no contested issues. Where matters are disputed — over the grounds for divorce, over assets, or over arrangements for children — proceedings must be brought before the Family and Juvenile Court. The Family Court system in Bangkok operates under a dedicated judicial division, and familiarity with its working practices is a practical advantage in contested matters.

ayothayaxad's practice has developed over fourteen years of consistent focus on this area of law. The firm does not take on unrelated commercial or criminal matters, and this concentration means that our understanding of family law procedure — the documents, the timelines, the likely approaches of the court — is detailed and current.
